The Myths of Carbs and Fat
September 5, 2013 By Dr. Anita Haque

When I was talking to Don today from Don’s Lifestyle Fitness in Livermore, he was talking to one of his clients about carbs, and after she left, we had this little discussion. Here’s what came out of that CARB discussion. Breaking rules is fun, especially when it gives
you the ability to eat your favorite great tasting
foods and still quickly burn off your unsightly
body fat. I don’t know about you but when you start to AGE,
you move slower. You don’t go up stairs as quickly, and things just
change. You start moving slower, and that’s not really good. The first thing we all learn about losing weight is that carbs will make you fat and must be avoided at all cost. This is completely WRONG!

Now don’t get me wrong.

Eating a Snicker’s bar, going to Subway for a big
sandwich, or drinking a soda which is loaded with
sugar is not going to help you reduce your waistline.

I get that, but…

…you absolutely can (and MUST) eat carbs on a daily
basis in order to lose fat and get your ideal body
as fast as possible.

CARBS give you energy. If you think you can live without
them, you’re WRONG. They’re good for you in the right
balance.

Yes, carbs CAN make you fat.

Carbs can add inches to your waistline.

Carbs can gum up the works, but you still need to eat
them, but the RIGHT ONES. (Don’t forget. Whole fresh
fruits and veggies are CARBS.)

But that’s no reason to jump to the extreme and eliminate
CARBS completely, or even drastically reduce your intake
of them, to lose unwanted body fat. Eat the right ones, at
the right times, and you’re GOOD.

You just have to be smart about how you eat them
(more on this in a moment).

Besides, any fat loss diet that isn’t sustainable
is a recipe for failure, which is exactly what carb-
restrictive diets are.

As I always say, the most important part of any
diet is to choose one that you will actually DO!
(With my program you know you’re going to lose
weight if you follow the protocol.)

I don’t know about you, but I love eating
carb-heavy foods like rice, pasta, potatoes,
cereal and fruit… I could keep going, but I
think you get the point.

But is there really a way to enjoy all of these
great tasting foods on a daily basis while still
losing body fat every week?

Not only is there a way to lose measurable amounts
of fat each week while eating some good carbs every day,
but you can actually use carbs to your ADVANTAGE by
using a little known, science-backed liquid supplement
that virtually eliminates the possibility of carbs
making you gain fat.

3 Natural Ways to Cut down Pain and Inflammation

Well Labor Day is already here.

With the long weekend coming up I wanted to share a quick tip of keeping inflammation away.

That’s an ouch type thing you know.

It can be chronic or acute, but it’s PAIN.

Here’s what I’ve noticed over the years.

So many patients over do stuff on long weekends and come in with aches and pains because of them being overactive.

So I figured I‘d share my (3) secret tips to saying goodbye to inflammation and keeping you feeling good for the upcoming holiday, from start to finish.

SECRET TIPS

1.Ginger-ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory. In one of my last emails I sent over a lemon water drink that helps to cleanse the body. This time, add some fresh ginger to the lemon, you can even add some local honey which helps with allergies and drink it down. It helps the entire body with cleansing, tastes good, and keeps the swelling and pain down (if you have any).

2.Ice it-if you stay too long in the garden this weekend picking weeds and feel pain. Grab some ice and place it on your sore spot for 20 minutes! It works immediately and has no side effects. Maybe a little COLD at first, but once your skin adapts to it, it’s really going to feel good. I would put a thin t-shirt or something in between the ice bad and your skin just to make it a little nicer to your skin.

3.Eat some wild salmon. Oh yeah, some wild salmon. Wild fresh salmon has healthy omega 3 fatty acids that helps to decrease inflammation in our bodies and helps with keeping you slim too! (I love that part of the equation for sure.) Pair it with a fresh salad or veggies for a delicious, weight reducing, inflammation fighting meal!

Main thing: Be healthy, safe and have fun over the 3 day weekend and don’t forget we won’t be open on Monday!

The Right Mattress for Back Pain

Dr. Anita Haque, Chiropractor gives her best mattress advice!

As a chiropractor in Livermore, I am asked daily about the right type of mattress to sleep on to relieve and help with back pain. That is why I wanted to share my insight and expertise to you today!

My opinion on this is not always shared with every other health professional and I am not in any way affiliated with any mattress companies to promote and/or endorse so this is strictly my feedback of what I feel is best and what I use at home.

The following list is what I do not believe to be a good a support for the spine and can eventually cause more weakness for the majority of people:

§ Tempur-pedic Mattresses or any foam type of support is too soft and since it ‘hugs’ the spine and any misalignments that may be present sleeping on this type of mattress or pillow is not a good support

§ Foam mattresses or foam toppings- just like the tempur-pedic mattress (which is a type of foam), it doesn’t offer much support to the spine and over time will create more weakness of the spinal bones and tissues.

§ Soft Mattresses or mattresses with a pillow top- just like the Tempur-pedic style of mattress or pillow, the softer the mattress the less the support on the spine. Although it may feel great at first over long periods of time most of my patients suffer with more back discomfort on a soft mattress

The following mattresses are a better support and option:

§ Sleep number- this mattress is a little pricey but I do think it is beneficial since it allows for the option to go really firm and softer based on needs and couples’ preferences without having to sleep on different beds in the home!

§ Firm mattress- this is my number one choice for the support of the spine and also for the cost and value. The old myth of “if your back hurts sleep on the floor” does come from some truth. Most of my patients who complain of severe back pain and try sleeping on the floor feel better in the morning.

So the rule of thumb is this… the firmer the support, the better! I hope this helps you in buying the right type of mattress and in case you are still suffering with back pain feel free to contact me for more help!

Dr. Anita Haque’s Diet Friendly Lemonade

Several of my weight loss patients ask me what they drink or do in the summer time that will not blow their diet while their friends enjoy a summer beverage. So I had a couple of minutes so I wanted to share my tasty drink (lemonade)

-that helps you lose weight,

-keeps you hydrated

-keeps you full, and is

-healthy for you.

YOU definitely don’t get many drinks like that in the grocery store, but this one only requires a couple of ingredients, is sweetened by Stevia, and it’s something you can drink everyday.

Arm Numbness Causes Discussed in Livermore Chiropractors Office

Do you have numbness in your arms?

Can your arm pain be caused by your neck?

The sensation often referred to as numbness or “pins and needles” is most commonly a nerve related sensation. A patient came into my office in Livermore this morning with this exact complaint. She explained that the numbness first began when she was working at a computer and so she thought it was carpal tunnel. As time progressed, she noticed the numbness when she was driving and then at night when she slept on her right side.

When she finally went to see her medical doctor, they gave her somepain medications to relieve the numbness but it didn’t seem to work very well as the duration of the numbness became constant with noticeable weakness in her arm.

This scenario of numbness is one I hear often. Actually, many times I find patients with numbness in their arms, hands or fingers are misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome. This can be easily done if no real examination or tests are performed to determine where the numbness is coming from. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused when one of the bones in the wrist is out of position causing pressure to the nerve that goes into the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome can also be caused by a ligament or muscle inflammation. If the injury is not at the wrist, the elbow is the next region where the same nerve to wrist and hand follows. If the elbow is not affected the shoulder is also a very common area where a misdiagnosis can be made. Often times, even though the numbness may be in the hand or elbow region the injury or the pinching of the nerve can be in the shoulder where one of the muscles are inflamed or ligaments and tendons are mis-aligned causing pressure on the nerves that run down the arm to the hand. The origin of this same nerve traces back to the neck. Frequently, the sensation of numbness in the arm or hand is found with a pinched nerve or subluxation in the cervical region.

When a patient comes in complaining of numbness to my office, the following is completed in every case:

1. A thorough history of the patient’s complains in order to establish the initial injury which will aid to the cause and source of the numbness

2. A complete neurologic, orthopedic, postural examination that includes muscular tests to rule out the possibility of a true carpal tunnel syndrome, elbow or shoulder impingement syndrome

3. Radiographs (X-rays) of the cervical spine (neck) and other areas of the spine if necessary

4. Full analysis of exam findings and x-rays

5. Report of findings to the patient explaining their injury, the cause, treatment options and any associated costs or insurance information.

Children and Chiropractic

My sister and her two boys along with my parents are visiting me from Vancouver, Canada.
I am not used to be around a 7 and a 9 year old but it is a load of fun (especially when you
aren’t the parent)! The one thing I noticed more than anything else is how smart and absorbent kids are at that age.

I mean, they pick up on everything and seem to RETAIN everything.
I had given them my childrens book that I just wrote and about kids wearing a good backpack to
protect their spines and prevent injuries and they seemed to understand the concept faster than their mom
(my sister). Actually, because I named the two boys in the book after them (Adam and Omar), they felt like stars and decided to act out the book in a little skit for us last night. It could not be more hysterical but I was wowed because of how well they understood (after I read them the book only once) that the spine contains nerves and that nerves send the signals from the brain to all the body parts and if the spine was injured then their nerves wouldnt work right. How complicated a concept for most adults to understand that a child can get in a few seconds!

Anyway…

After they did their little skit they started asking me to write another book about good food! My nephew Adam had suggested that it be about Omar eating chocolate and getting sick to his stomach and him eating fruits and getting healthy!

How well do your kids and loved ones understand the simple concepts of true health?

Here’s what I’ve realized.

Being around my family and little minds this weekend inspires me to educate our youth on good health even more than before.

I know that if we teach the young people the right principals now, maybe, just maybe, we will see a future decline on obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

When you teach them the right way from the beginning, it tends to follow them throughout their future life.

It’s true what they say.

You can learn so much from children. I know I have these past few days.

Warmest Regards,

Dr. Anita Haque

P.S. Did you know that during all of March, we are checking all kids at NO COST? Yes a FREE, full exam, & scoliosis checkup just for stopping by. This is my way of helping the future generation from ill health and aches and pains (that often times if hereditary and caught early can be prevented).

Call me today to get your child in for a NON invasive, NO PAIN spinal and nerve checkup CALL (925)960-1960 NOW.

P.P.S. If you would like to check out my childrens book (the same one I gave to Omar and Adam) for your kids, come by for a paperback copy (14.99) or you can order the kindle version for 3.99 from amazon by clicking:

Chiropractic treatment for plantar fasciitis in Livermore

Foot pain solved at Haque Chiropractic

Plantar fasciitis is a diagnosis often given to patients who have pain in their feet and a thickening of the tendons on the bottom of their feet. It is a general diagnosis but the treatment protocol from M.D.s are to rest, ice, take anti-inflammatory drugs, possibly cortisone injections and physical therapy. Sometimes this protocol will work for a period of time but most often, I see patients who have had this condition for years without significant improvement. At the end of it, their condition is at a cost to their quality of life. Many don’t run any more, exercise or walk for long periods because of their condition that they become accustomed to.

The good news: other treatment options do exist that are in many cases MORE EFFECTIVE! And yes, without drugs and without surgery! The feet are indubitably the foundation to our bodies. The 26 bones that make up each foot can mis-align, pull on tendons and ligaments and cause irritation and pain. An effective treatment option in my office with my patients is the following:

When a patient comes in complaining of pain in their feet, ankles, knees hips and/or lower back pain, weexamine the arches of their feet. There are three arches that make up the feet and when they are all present that tells us that the foot is moving properly allowing the joints above (ankle, knees hips, etc.) to also move correctly. When an arch is lost or too pronounced, the biomechanics of the body will shift as the ligaments, muscles and tendons will move differently and since everything all connects together it will cause improper motion of joints and things can/will misalign and cause pain and irritation.

Once the actual shift of the bone, loss of arch or exact cause of the pain is determined after an evaluation, we will focus on re-aligning the bones of the foot correctly, support the feet with custom-made orthotics (if necessary) reset the tendons and work out the scar tissue that has developed in the ligaments that has in some cases caused significant loss of motion of the foot and extreme pain. The results are that the patient will regain proper movement of their feet and joints above and resume a happy motion-filled life again!

Know someone who has been suffering with foot/ankle pain? Have them contact us for evaluation and possible treatment at our office.

Chiropractic for Jaw Pain and Headaches

February 14, 2013 by Dr. Anita Haque

Jaw pain and headaches can be linked

Over the years in my office in Livermore, I have seen hundreds of patients with the diagnosis of “TMJ” who thought they had to live with the clicking and discomfort in their jaw. What they didn’t know until we probed further, was that often times their headaches were linked to the TMJ and the cause of it.

Many people don’t know that there is a solution to resolve both jaw pain and headaches. Chiropractic adjustments have helped hundreds in my office safely and quickly.

How do you know if you have a problem with either? Here is what to look for:

It’s hard to open your jaw all the way without a “pop” or “click” noise

You experience dull or achy pain around the temporal areas of your head

When you put your hands on your jaw and open your mouth it doesn’t feel straight

If you have noticed one of the above then it might be a good idea to get checked by a chiropractor to see if you can get relief and correct the problem.

Don’t delay if you are suffering with this as it only gets harder to take care of. Check out our coupon online for your first visit or ask me the next time you visit the office to check your jaw!

How to Get Rid of Mid Back Stiffness

February 7, 2013 by Dr. Anita Haque

Stiffness in between the shoulder blades is so common because of our postural habits in America. I mean, who doesn’t spend time sitting in front of a computer for length nowadays?

Watch the video to see how you can increase your flexibility by practicing the “Breath and stretch” technique. It’s quite simple: You start by breathing in, begin your stretch position and then exhale while you push your stretch a little more. As you continue it will help your muscle and ligament lengthen and you will become more flexible.

Should You Get The Flu Vaccine?

January 10, 2013 by Dr. Anita Haque

Today when I was adjusting a patient of mine for her neck pain, she was telling me about her recent experience at her medical doctor’s office. She took her son in to get checked and was asked if they were vaccinated for the flu vaccine yet. When she told them they haven’t, she explained she was given an evil eye and told that the ‘flu kills’! I asked her whether she then decided to get the vaccine and she explained that she doesn’t believe that a healthy child or adult needs a vaccine. I find that everyone is talking about the flu with all the sickness that goes around right after the holidays.

There’s so much false information out there and a lot of it is controversial. If you notice, there are signs for the “FREE FLU Vaccine Given Here” posters.

I did some research to help bring you the facts so you can decide whether you need the vaccine or not.

Here’s what I found:

The last flu epidemic was in 1918

The flu vaccine like all other viruses mutates which makes it difficult to predict.

Scientist come together every February and guess what strains they think are coming around and pick the top three they think would be the strains of flu and make the vaccine.

Sometimes they don’t guess the right virus like in 2003-2004, the CDC admitted that it completely missed the virulent Fujian flu strain that hit hard that winter.

The most common side effects to getting the flu are fever, rash, headaches, hives, or, very rarely, seizures. The most common side effect is swelling at the injection site on your arm.

Except for about 8 million doses, the flu vaccine contains a preservative, thimerosal, that is 49 percent mercury, a known neurotoxin. This neurotoxin is dangerous for children especially under the age of 6

Most people are likely to catch the cold since there are over 200 viruses and many of mistakenly think it’s the flu vaccine.

So do you need to get the flu vaccine?
I can’t make that decision for you but I can tell you what things DO NATURALLY increase your immunity:

1. Plenty of rest
2. Plenty of water-even better if it’s alkaline because viruses can’t thrive in an alkaline water
3. Exercise
4. Stress management
5. Healthy diet
6. Having healthy nerves in your spine that connect your brain to the immune system.

Remember, your health is in your own hands and you can be as healthy as you would like to be! For more information on getting a healthy nervous system, call our office for a FREE consultation.

Healthy Holiday Dinner

January 3, 2013 by Dr. Anita Haque

Hi there!

What did you have for your Christmas dinner? Like many of my patients who are complaining of over eating and having too much of this and that over the holidays I was asked by several patients what I had for my holiday dinner. Now, I am risking my reputation by sharing my holiday diner with the world but maybe it will bring on some laughs, and possibly inspire you to make whatever dish you love HEALTHY!!

So here it is…..

First off we wanted to have hot chili on a cool day so instead of traditional chili with the all the sodium from canned beans and fatty meat we soaked organic Black Kidney Beans and Garbanzo Beans over night, cooked them with garlic, onions and tomatoes and then added shreddd chicken breast. It was fabulous! No extra salt and fat and it was whole some. You will notice in the picture some cornbread too that we used from Bob’s Mill’s Gluten Free Corn Bread Mix. That was delicious too!

I’m the expert at making salads! So i cut up lettuce, pears, cucumbers, onions and a few slices of Persimmon to make it festive and added my own dressing which consisted of olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon juice and a little balsamic. It was scrumptious!

Holiday Salad and Chicken Chili

Now on to desert….my other area that I try to re-make all my favorites healthy. I cut up and peeled 3 organic pears. Placed in them in the bottom of a dish. Added a little lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and coconut sugar (Organic Coconut sugar much better than refined sugar and low on the glycemic index). You can also use Truvia instead of sugar if you’d like. For the topping, a little gluten free oats, gluten free flour, crushed raw walnuts, coconut sugar, cinnamon and I added in coconut butter to make it crumble. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 and voila…warm and healthy. Of course you can add a little ice cream to the mix too (coconut ice cream is what we use at home for these types of recipes).

So there is way to make a healthy dinner and have it taste great too!! If you want more tips on weight loss and healthy recipes…you can always visit www.safeexerciseforweightloss.com

Allergy Relief in Livermore

May 19, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

How Chiropractic Care can help with Allergies this spring in Livermore, CA

In my chiropractic office I see many patients suffering from allergies especially this time of year when spring is in full bloom. With the budding flowers and plants come tiny particles which for many people can cause irritation to their airways and sinus cavities. What many of my allergy sufferers find interesting is that their sinuses will clear when I finish adjusting their neck. How is that possible you may wonder? How does an adjustment of the neck help to relieve sinus pressure and congestion?

The answer to this question is tied up to the nerves…literally! Since the nervous system is the master control system of the body, the nerves that pass in between vertebral segments can be pinched by a vertebrae out of alignment. Decrease nerve flow will not allow the signals from the brain go through accurately to the organs. In the upper region of the neck, the nerve supply affects many organs in into the head and face including the sinus cavities. By re-aligning a vertebrae that may be out of place in that region, the nerve flow will be able to return to it’s normal state and therefore allow the sinuses to open up and function more optimally. This phenomenon occurs every day in my office even though most of those patients are not even seeking help for their sinuses. Most of the time, their original complaint they come to see me for is some type of neck discomfort or headache. The added benefit they begin to learn about is the improvement of the functioning of their body by improving the nervous system communication.

Stress warning signs explained by Chiropractor in Livermore

May 10, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

Are you ignoring dangerous warning signals from your body???

So tomorrow I am going to be speaking at the corporate office of Re Max in Pleasanton on stress. And as I am sitting here preparing my presentation, I realized that so many of my patients and friends ignore the most basic warning signals that our bodies give off when we are under long periods of stress. Here is the list I am going to present tomorrow that I wanted to share:

If you have any one of these symptoms, PAY ATTENTION TO IT! It is danger signs that your body is breaking down and your health is suffering. Remember that health is not a measure on how you are feeling or how well you can ignore symptoms; instead it is a measure on how well your body is FUNCTIONING.

If you have any questions or need to address these symptoms call us for an appointment (925)960-1960.

That’s all for now…..

Warning Signs of an unhealthy Spine in Livermore

May 3, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

How do you know if you have an unhealthy spine?

Symptoms such as headache, neck or back pain, numbness, tingling or other health problems can often be caused by spinal misalignments (called “subluxations”).

These misalignments can be caused by ordinary movements or by intense trauma to the spine (such as a car accident or other injury). Because these misaligned vertebrae can affect the function of the spinal cord and nervous system, it is vital that the spine be checked for misalignments.

Some of the obvious symptoms of spinal misalignments include:

Your heels wear out unevenly

You have headaches, back aches, neck pain, stiffness or soreness in muscles or joints

Your foot flares out when walking

You are often fatigued, have poor circulation, low resistance to disease or infection

You can’t turn your head or hips equally to either side

You feel stiff getting out of bed each morning

Your posture is not correct

Many spinal misalignments however give NO warning signs, like a cavity before it becomes painful. Even though you can’t feel them, they can adversely affect your health. For this reason I recommend to my patients in Livermore to bring in their family members including their children to get checked before the warning signs set in and the problem has gotten out of control. For more information on getting your spine checked contact us.

Chiropractor in Livermore discusses water for back pain

April 26, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

Thirsty for water? Take the water challenge!

So maybe you’ve been complaining like many others about the gas prices we have had to deal with lately, but I have to wonder, why don’t people complain about the price of buying water?

I mean, every grocery store has at least one dedicated isle to bottled water, when we get to turn on our tap and get it for free! It doesn’t make sense to me especially since most bottled water is actually not very good for you and can actually DEHYDRATE YOU!! Sounds crazy right? I know, I thought the same thing too before I did some research and took the water challenge.

What I am talking about it is your body’s pH which is a scale between 0-14. 0-7 is acidic and 7.1-14 is alkaline. Our bodies function best at around 7.41-8. Being slightly alkaline, our bodies are better hydrated, we have less inflammation (pain), our bodies fight off bacteria and viruses more readily and the list continues of benefits. So drinking bottled water can be very acidic so can tap water. You can do the test yourself! Buy a litmus test from your local pharmacy and test your tap water by dipping the strip into bottled water and tap water and see what the pH is. If it’s acidic, that means every time you drink that water, you are creating more acidity in your body!

What to do? Drink Alkalinized water! Alkalinized water is filtered water that is pure and is more alkaline so that when you consume it, it helps your body’s pH to be at its optimal alkaline state so you are healthier, and more hydrated and feel better. Don’t believe me yet? Do the test or stop into the office to try alkaline water for free!

How to avoid backback injuries in Livermore

April 18, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

Did you know that more than 20,000 children suffer from backpack injuries each year?

These injuries range from contusions, to sprains and strains to the back and shoulders as well as fractures.

“Back pain in children is not so uncommon anymore,” according to John Purvis, MD, pediatric orthopedic surgeon.Orthopedic surgeons nationwide have seen an increase in children visiting their offices complaining of back and shoulder pain. If a child complains of back pain, parents should consider that it might be due to the backpack or perhaps something more serious. Back pain that persistently limits a child’s activities, requires medication or alters sleep patterns warrants investigation.”

While some experts disagree on whether heavy backpacks are the source of back pain in children, most agree that using good judgment when wearing one will reduce the risk of backpack-related injuries. It is important to partner with children on the selection, packing and caring of the backpack.

The golden rule in backpack safety is to make sure that the weight of the back pack does not exceed 20% of the child’s weight. For example, if the child weighs 80lbs, the weight of the backpack should not be more than 16lbs as it will risk more injury. It is also important, that when choosing a backpack, that both shoulder straps fit properly around the shoulders and snug around the back. This will ensure proper weight distribution.

As this month of April rolls in, have you children checked at our office in Livermore. Avoid having your children grow up with spinal injuries by calling our office today!

How to pull weeds instead of your back in Livermore, CA

April 5, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

Safe Gardening tips for your back:

This week in my office had several patients who came in complaining of back pain after working outside in their garden. Although pulling weeds and planting a garden is eco-friendly and can be a good workout, it can also be dangerous to your back if you don’t do it properly. This week’s blog features tips on keep your back strong and feeling good while tending to a beautiful yard or garden.
• Stand up and prop your heel on a back door step or stool with your knee straight. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull in the muscle at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do the stretch once more, then repeat with the other leg.
• Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with you left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch the quadriceps muscles at the front of your thigh. Hold that position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg.
• Weave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times.
• “Hug your best friend:” Wrap your arms around yourself and rotate to one side, as far as you can go. Hold it for 10 seconds, then reverse.
It’s also a good idea to warm-up and cool-down as if you were performing a sport as it can be one! And most importantly, if you are feeling aches and pains from gardening and the pain persists, consider visiting a chiropractor.

Livermore Chiropractor explains TMJ

March 29, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

TMJ relief with chiropractic adjustments

The temporal-mandibular-joint (TMJ) is one of the strongest joints of the body as it is used constantly with talking, chewing, yawning and eating. Often times stress can lead to an irritation to this joint. Many people tend to clench their jaw or teeth when feeling stressed out and are not even aware that they are doing it. With that being said, many people suffer with jaw clicking, pain and popping. Jaw problems can often lead to headaches, neck pain, dizzy spells and ear aches.

This past week, I had a new patient come in complaining of the exact symptoms described above. She explained that her jaw began to click and pop and ache and as months progressed and it didn’t miraculously “go away”, she noticed headaches at the back of her skull and neck pain. She finally decided to visit us as a friend of hers is already a patient and suggested she try natural drug-free chiropractic care.

Upon her exam, I noticed her TMJ was off alignment severely. I also found vertebrae in her neck mis-aligned creating pressure on nerves therefore causing the neck pain and headaches. I also took an X-ray of her skull, jaw and neck region and measured the mis-alignments so we could correct them gently and specifically.

The results… Immediately, after her first adjustment of her jaw and neck, she felt relief after 6 months of pain. She was more than pleased of course and was surprised she could feel so much better without any medication. Getting to the cause of pain is usually the fastest and smartest route in relieving pain.

Know someone with jaw pain? Have them contact us to see if they too can have drug-free pain relief and correction of their problems.

Natural Migraine Relief in Livermore

March 22, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

Migraine headaches have to be the worst type of head pain anyone can experience. Often times, patients who suffer with migraines have them repeatedly and experience the following symptoms:

Pain throughout the head

Sensitivity to light

Sensitivity to noise

Nausea and/or vomiting

Associated pain in neck and shoulders

Aura or spotting in vision

Sounds awful don’t it? As a chiropractor in Livermore I can tell you that there are so many sufferers and it isn’t just females.Plenty of male patients come in complaining of migraine headaches and it also occurs in both teenagers and adults. So what do many of these migraine sufferers do? Miss out on life! Often times, patients tell me when they first come in suffering of migraine headaches that they have tried several pain relieving dugs including Excedrin and other stronger types and it doesn’t always work or the migraines still come back every week! With this in mind, people with migraines usually lay down in a quiet dark room for several hours and try to sleep which accounts to missing out on days of work, play and life.

What several people have found is that chiropractic care can help significantly with migraines! How? Chiropractic works with the nervous system and it is the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) that contain pain receptors letting the brain know about a problem. When treating a patient with migraine headaches, we look to find mis-aligned vertebrae in the upper part of the neck that is putting pressure on nerve(s) and work to gently re-align the vertebrae off the nerve getting rid of pressure and therefore the pain. Often times, patients who come into our office with a migraine headache, will leave feeling 50-75% better and report that within one hour of their treatment their migraine is gone without any drugs. Imagine, getting your life back instead of suffering for days. In many cases, patients who have come into my office with chronic migraines for several years notice that not only do their migraines improve but chiropractic has eliminated the majority of their migraine headaches allowing them to lead a healthier life.

If you or a loved one suffers from migraine headaches, don’t continue to suffer and lose out on days in life, contact us to see if we can help.

Should you go Organic in Livermore, CA

March 21, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

With my weight loss program for my patients in Livermore, there is much talk and confusion about whether it really makes a difference to buy organic foods versus regular foods. So here’s the skinny on that!

The big difference:

Organic foods are regulated to be grown with minimal hormones, pesticides and antibiotics. For example, organic chicken has to be raised without hormones, antibiotics and is free-roaming so the chicken will exercise instead of being cooped up and cramped with a thousand other chickens.

So does it really make a difference? My take is that the old expression, “you are what you eat” holds true. Think of it this way, what you consume breaks down and feeds your body and ultimately becomes a part of your body. So if you are eating a lot of foods grown with artificial components or treated with a lot of chemicals, it can make the difference in the long run.

What about fruits and veggies? The soil that is used to grow fruits and veggies play a huge role on the quality and quantity of vitamins and minerals the fruit or vegetable contains. So that means not all salads are created equally!

Do a test for yourself…eat organic for one whole day see what you will notice….

First off you might notice it’s not that big (a real organic apple organic vs. the supersized shiny magazine-like apple that isn’t organic)

You might also notice it’s sweeter! Yes, like candy. Fruit is nature’s candy or it used to be before all the chemicals, pesticides etc.

You also might notice you feel more satisfied…And if you feel more satisfied, you will probably eat less and lose weight faster!

Do the test for yourself. Yes it costs more to go organic, but what is the worth of the cost of your health in the long run?

Using Ice or Heat for Back pain

March 13, 2012 By Dr. Anita Haque

There seems to be much confusion with my patients in Livermore of when to ice an injury or when to apply heat. The difference between the two is at large and can make the difference in your recovery from an injury. The cooling sensation of ice helps to decreases blood flow to the area where the ice is applied. Therefore, ice will help to decrease swelling and inflammation since inflammation is caused by a surcharge of blood flow and other products our bodies make when there is an injury. Heat on the other hand, helps to bring blood flow into an area where it is applied. So here are the ground rules:

1. Always use ice within the first 48 hours of an injury. For example, if one should happen to fall and hurt their knee, or stub their big toe or even fracture their wrist. The ice will act as an anti-inflammatory and provide for relief since it produces a numbing effect.

2. Once the injury is past the 2-day-mark, heat is the better choice. Heat brings more blood flow to the area of an injury. For chronic aches and pain, stiffness in the muscles or joints, osteoarthritis etc., applying heat will allow for more blood to enter the joint which will allow for relief and healing of a degenerative joint.
It is also important to realize that using ice for too long can be harmful and actually reverse the effects. After 20 minutes of applying ice, the body will produce a reaction known as the “Huntington reaction” where the body will start to increase the blood flow to the area. That is why the best method of applying ice is in 15-20 minute intervals where the ice is on for 15-20 minutes and then off for 15-20 minutes. This produces the fastest results of relief and reduced swelling. My favorite homemade ice pack contains 2 parts water and 1 part alcohol in a plastic bag where it forms a slushy ice bag that can conform to the affected area. Just like ice, not all types of heat are beneficial either. By that, it should be understood that moist heat is the most productive type of heat where the moisture will enter past the surface level deeper into a muscle and joint. Dry heat, such as an electrical heating pad, will only hit the surface of the skin and can even dry the muscles further. The easiest way to produce moist heat is to apply a damp towel (warmed in the microwave) to the affected area. Hopefully some of the guess work of ice and heat is resolved, and remember, if you ever get confused, always ask your health professional!
